Setting up your registered office address

Every Australian company must have a registered office address. It's a legal requirement under the Corporations Act 2001 and one of the key details ASIC records on the public register.

What is a registered office?

A registered office is the official address of your company. It's where ASIC and other regulatory bodies will send formal correspondence like annual review notices, compliance documents, and any legal notices.

It also appears on the publicly searchable ASIC company register, so anyone can look it up.

ASIC's requirements

The registered office must:

  • Be a physical Australian street address
  • Be a place where documents can be physically delivered during business hours
  • Not be a PO Box, GPO Box, or Locked Bag

Common mistake: Using a PO Box as your registered office. ASIC will reject this. Our platform automatically detects PO Box patterns in your address and blocks submission to prevent delays.

Registered office vs principal place of business

ASIC requires two addresses when you register a company:

  • Registered office — the official address on the public register for formal correspondence
  • Principal place of business — where you primarily operate day-to-day

These can be the same address. On our platform, there's a simple toggle: "Principal Place is the same as Registered Office". When enabled, the address is copied automatically so you don't have to enter it twice.

What information you'll need

For each address, you'll provide:

  • Address Line 1 (required)
  • Address Line 2 (optional — for unit or suite numbers)
  • Suburb (required)
  • State (selected from Australian states/territories)
  • Postcode (a valid 4-digit Australian postcode)

Can I use my home address?

Yes. Many small company owners use their home address as the registered office, especially when starting out. The main thing to be aware of is that this address will be publicly visible on the ASIC register.

If privacy is a concern, consider using a co-working space or registered office service that offers a physical street address.

Can I change it later?

Yes. You can update your registered office address after registration by notifying ASIC. You must inform ASIC within 28 days of any change.

How our platform helps

  • Guides you through both addresses in a single step
  • Prevents PO Box entries with real-time validation
  • Auto-copies your registered office to the principal place if they're the same
  • Validates Australian postcodes (4-digit format)
